After graduating she founded Lazy Eye and created and directed live shows for bands including Death In Vegas and Beth Orton. Her work as an illustrator began in 2001 when she founded Hey Ladies fanzine with a group of female friends. Influenced by fairy tales, traditional folk illustrations, Vanitas paintings, psychedelic poster art, experimental film and surrealism she continues to explore different techniques and evolves her style.

Her work includes CD covers for Oasis and Goldfrapp, art for print like Nylon Magazine, NME, Italian Marie Claire, Vogue and The Guardian, as well as work for companies like Absolut Vodka, Calvin Klein, Miss Selfridge, Random House and Topshop among others.

I haven’t liked an artist this much for a while and I am absolutely in love !

Ian Francis was born in 1979 in Bristol, England where he continues to live and work. Among his influences he names Reggie Pedro, Stanley Donwood and Dave McKean. Ian calls his work “apocalyptic” and he draws his inspiration from cinema, pornography, street culture, and images sampled at random from the Internet.

His solo exhibitions could be seen at the Lazarides Gallery, London (2010); the MTV Gallery in Sydney, Australia (2009); at Kinsey/DesForges in Los Angeles (2008); and the BLK/MRKT Gallery in Los Angeles (2007). His work has also been featured in the group exhibitions The Outsiders, Lazarides Gallery, London and New York (2008); and Free Parking, OKOK Gallery, Seattle (2007).

He mimics bodily structures found within nature by constructing abstract bodies formed from multiple elements giving his art an anime like feel. Roper is heavily influenced by the excessive and sensuously rich imagery of Baroque art and it’s depiction of the unfettering of religious restraint.

His work has been shown in London, Milan, Los Angeles, New York, among others and has been published in magazines like Dazed and Confused and Art Review. He has been brought to my attention by a Spanish gallery and while I usually show only my favorite artists he warrants a place on my site as I instantly liked his work.

Jägel’s work appears in The Museum of Modern Art in NYC (collections), The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The UCLA Hammer Museum and the Portland Museum of Art.  He lives with his wife and two daughters in San Francisco.

Among other things he has worked for numerous magazines like Rolling Stone, Flaunt, GQ Magazine, SPIN, Maxim or Myself Magazine and illustrated advertisements for fashion as well as celebrity portraits.

Why I like his art:

Some of his work strangely reminded me of  Botticelli right away and then I came across an illustration that acually had Botticelli’s Venus with a twist incorporated in it. Botticelli was the subject of my final art studies way back when … I love Hajek’s art because it is so imaginitive.

Ruiz is an Australian artist who studied Visual Arts at Melbourne University. Ruiz’s primary work was technology driven and spun across several industries while he found himself more and more fascinated by visual analysis, drawing and painting of the human figure. His first solo exhibition in Melbourne November 2005 was well received and Ruiz has since then found eager collectors in and outside of Australia.

Why I like his art:
The subjects of his paintings almost appear to have an emotionally dark photographs from a past like quality.

I really, really love them ! Gary Hirsch was born in 1964 and grew up in Cleveland Heights Ohio and now lives with his family (wife and two kids)  in Portland, Oregon.

“Doodling” does not seem to be his “main” occupation (nor art) but his pictures are so fabulous that I think it should be !

He works in Brooklyn, NY and teaches at the City University in the Bronx. When you look at his work, which goes into various directions, it’s almost like it’s alive and because I love the play with type/words & shapes I had to have him on my site.
